German national suspected to be a child trafficker detained

A German national suspected to be a child trafficker will spend 21 days in jail in Nairobi to allow police to complete investigations into the allegations.

Senior Resident Magistrate Muthoni Nzibe allowed the police to continue detaining Thomas Scheller who was found in company of a minor at a lodge in Nairobi.

Scheller is suspected to be involved in child trafficking, child pornography and defilement.

He has been under security radar in Mombasa over several child pornography in Kwale under miscellaneous No. 989/2020.

Detective Lawrence Okoth attached to DCI- Anti Human Trafficking and Child Protection Unit (AHTCPU) told the court that the suspect was arrested on Monday and they needed 62 more days to complete investigation. However, the magistrate found 21 days to be sufficient for now.

“The suspect was arrested on 4th May 2020 by the DCI officers from AHTCPU outside the German Embassy, Nairobi together with a Kenyan minor who is suspected to be a victim of Child trafficking and defilement.

The 15 year old girl is a pupil at Ngara primary school in Kisumu and the suspect led the police to the lodge he had been staying with the minor since 30th April to 4th May 2020.

The suspect managed to travel with the minor all the way from Kisumu to Nairobi yet Nairobi is under lockdown due to Corona virus.

Okoth told the court that cyber intelligence has revealed that Scheller shared child pornographic material to a registered sexual offender in Germany.

The matter was reported to Ukunda police station via OB 32/6/8/2019.
