Migori County Governor Okoth Obado has been charged with the murder of slain Rongo University student Sharon Otieno before a Nairobi court.

Accoding to the charge sheet, Obado is alleged to have murdered Sharon, mother of two, between 3rd and 4th September 2018 at Owade area in Rachuonyo sub-county in Homabay County jointly with others not before court.

The governor denied the charges before Justice Jessie Lessit who directed that he be remanded at Industrial area GK prison pending the hearing and determination of the bail application.

His lawyers Cliff Ombeta and Nicholas Ombija had requested the court to have their client be detained at Gigiri police station but the prayer was denied.

The prosecution had argued that the police had no mandate to handle the Governor given that he had already been presented before court and pleaded to the charges.

The judge directed that the bail application be heard on 25th September 2018 at 2pm.

Section 203 as read with section 204 of the penal code reads that…….”Any person who of malice aforethought causes death of another person by an unlawful act or omission is guilty of murder. Any person convicted of murder shall be sentenced to death…..”

According to a press release by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji, Obado was to be charges with aiding and abetting an offense of murder.

On 12th September, Obado’s personal assistant Michael Oyamo was presented in court on similar charges where police requested  for 14 days to complete investigations.

Justice Luka Kimaru granted the prayers and directed that Oyamo be presented in court on 26th September.

The PA was first arraigned in Homabay before the case was transfered to Nairobi.

According to pathologists, Sharon’s body which was found in a thicket in Oyugis had eight stab wounds, one which pierced from the back through the abdomen and killed her seven month foetus.
