Man in Sh 2 million witchcraft fraud charged

Another suspect believed to be among those who defrauded a businessman Sh 2 million by tricking him that his land had evil spirits has been charged.

Vimal Kumar Hasmukhbai Patel is accused of conspiring with others before court to defraud Harbans Singh Nandisingh Santa by tricking him that the land he was intending to sell had evil spirits to wit a snake and other witchcraft paraphernalia (cowry shells, gourds, black powders, assorted clothing) which required cleansing by burning the snake and scattering its ashes into the Indian ocean.

Vimal is alleged to have committed the offence between 10th June and 26th June 2019 at 16 Red Hill Garden, in Westlands within Nairobi.

He is also charged with two counts of cheating and further conspiring to defraud the complainant another Sh 280,000 by tricking him that his land in Kitisuru which he was planning to sell had evil spirits.

He denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi.

The prosecution did not object the release of the accused person on bail but informed the court they wished to consolidate the matter with the other file already before court.

He was released on a cash bail of Sh 300,000. The case will be mentioned on 26th September 2019.

Three men were charged last month with similar offences and released on similar bail terms.
