Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association (KMJA) has expressed concern on the recent attacks on the judiciary and disobedience of court orders by politicians.
While addressing the press at Milimani law courts, KMJA Secretary General Derrick Kuto said the Association is resolute that they shall uphold the rule of law, steadfastly defend the constitution of Kenya and diligently dispense justice without fear.
“The judiciary, specifically the office of the President of the Supreme court David Maraga and other memvers of the bench have come under attack by the political class in connection with discharge of their duties,” said Kuto.
The Secretary General further said it is in bad faith for a litigant to target individual judges, magistrates or Kadhis in the discharge of their duties.
“As KMJA, we believe in the independence of the judiciary even as we appreciate the interdependence and respect amongst the three arms of Government,” said Kuto
KMJA President Jacqueline Kamau said that if people fail to follow the law, there will be total anarchy in the country.
“Politicians and wanjiku should obey the law. Orders given by court should be followed because if we fail to follow the law, the country will burn,” said Kamau.
She concluded by saying that the law is for everyone there will be no democracy if people do not adhere by it.
The association called upon Kenyans in the quest to defend the constitution and uphold the rule of law.
Recently, the government has made headlines after defying court orders in the Miguna Miguna matter among others.
The court declared the deportation of self declared National Resist Movement (NRM) ‘General’ Miguna Miguna null and void but the government still holds that due process was followed in deporting him.
The respondents in the matter have so far filed a notice of appeal on the ruling by Justice Luka Kimaru.
