Student charged with conspiracy and stealing 3M from Equity Bank

A training institute student has been charged in Nairobi with attempting to steal over Sh 45 million from Equity Bank.

Stephen Kagiri Kariuki was also charged with stealing Sh 3 million and handling stolen property.

Kariuki was charged that on diverse dates between 3rd November 2014 and 17th November 2017 at Equity Bank Headquarters in Nairobi, jointly with others not before the court, conspired to steal Sh 45,166,720 the property of the said Bank.

The accused, a student at Kenya Youth Empowerment Project, a Private Sector Training and Internships was also charged with stealing Sh 3,162,899 from Equity Bank Githurai Branch on diverse dates between 29th April 2016 and 17th November 2017.

Lastly, Kariuki faced an alternative charge of handling stolen property.

It is alleged that on the same dates and place, otherwise that in the cause of stealing, the accused dishonestly received the Sh 3.1 million in an account under his name held at the Githurai branch knowing or having reason to believe it to be stolen money or unlawfully obtained.

He denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Kenneth Cheruiyot and was granted a cash bail of Sh 150,000.
