
A Nairobi businessman has been charged with stealing a Toyota Prado from his sister-in-law.
Brian Juma Atoo is accused of stealing the said vehicle valued at Sh 5.8 million from Elizabeth Anyango Oketch on 14th April 2025 at Delemare flats parking yard along Milimani road in Nairobi.
Atoo is also charged with stealing from the said car two rack mount servers, make power edge R750xs, valued at Sh 2.8 million, the property Oketch.
The accused person is facing an alternative charge of handling stolen property.
According to the charge sheet, the accused, otherwise than in the course of stealing dishonestly retained the said vehicle knowing or having reasons to believe it to be a stolen property.
He denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo and was released on a cash bail of Sh 300,000.
When given an opportunity to address the court, Atoo said that the complainant is his sister-in-law who is also his business partner.
He told the court that he had loaned her Sh 14 million of which she had paid back Sh 12 million.
She allegedly gave him the car as security but returned the same to her after she told him she was having difficulties taking her child to school.
According to the accused person, once Oketch failed to clear the Sh 2 million balance, he decided to take the car back.
He allegedly took photos of the car and everything in it and sent them to her informing her of his decision to take back the vehicle.
He then went to Kileleshwa police station to report the incident but things took a different turn.
While in the office of the OCS, other police officers come and informed him that he was under arrest because of a complaint made by the sister-in-law.
He told court how he was allegedly frustrated by police officers after arrest since they did not want to grant him bail so that he could go home over the Easter holiday and appear in court the following Tuesday.
