A Nairobi court has allowed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to detain a man found carrying a dismembered body in Huruma, Nairobi, for 21 days to complete investigations.
Principal Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe allowed the DCI to detain John Kyama Wambua to conclude investigations into a case of murder of a woman he claimed to be his wife.
In an affidavit by Corporal Kassim Yakub, the suspect was arrested on 21st January 2025 at about 4.30 am carrying the dismembered body in a bag; a move the investigators claim was an attempt to dispose the body.
Officer Yakub said that on the material day, officers attached at Huruma police station while on patrol, sighted Wambua carrying a bag on his back looking suspicious.
“They stopped him and conducted a search on the said bag and discovered human body parts (thoraxic part) stashed in a nylon cement carrier,” the investigator added.
The court heard that, upon interrogation the respondent led the officers to his house where some other parts of the body were recovered and the suspect confessed the parts belonged to his wife.
The respondent allegedly told the officers that he had found his wife with another man and when they got to the house an argument ensued leading to the murder and later chopped the body in order to dispose it.
Wambua, 29, is suspected to have murdered the victim on 20th January 2025 at Kasanova are in Huruma.
The officers told the court that the suspect is at flight risk due to the the seriousness of the offense and is capable of interfering with witnesses.
“The suspect can interfere with investigations since we are yet to recover another murder weapon which we suspect to be a panga,” the investigator added.
Officer Yakub said that his team needs time to take the suspect for a mental assessment, conduct a postmortem, recover missing body parts and record statements from witnesses.
He added that they need time to undertake a DNA test to ascertain the real age and identity of the deceased since no documents were recovered.
