It is now time for former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to give his side of the story in Sh 20 million graft case as defense hearing kicks off.
In the case, Sonko is facing several graft charges alongside Patrick Ambok Jamal.
One of the witnesses in Sonko’s team was Chief Inspector Kiptoo Kisoroi who narrated how his then boss at DCI Mtwapa informed him that Sonko was seeking their assistance in recording the bribery conversation between him and Webtribe/JamboPay Director Danson Muchemi.
Kisoroi told Principal Magistrate Charles Ondieki that he then proceeded to record the incident in the occurrence book and issued the former governor with a Sony recorder.
“We showed him how to use the device to capture the conversation,” the officer testified.
According to the officer, the conversation lasted almost an hour and he had brought the CD that had the recording to court as part of his evidence.
However, the magistrate directed that the recording be played on 17th July 2025 in open court.
Kisoroi told the court that Muchemi had tried to bribe him several times in a bid to secure a county revenue tender.
It was his testimony that the Webtribe director had offered Sonko four to five million a day to work with him.
In addition, he claimed that Muchemi told Sonko that the governor before him, Evans Kidero, had pocketed Sh 7 billion from the deal in his five-year tenure.
The hearing will continue with 10 more witnesses lined up in Sonko’s defense team.
