Man suspected of cybercrime charged with forging 7 ID cards

A man has been charged with seven counts of forging National Identify cards.

Emmanuel Kipkoech Rotich is accused of forging the seven identify cards belonging to both men and women.

Rotich who resides in Umoja-one is alleged to have committed the offense on unknown dates and place within Kenya.

According to the charge sheet, the accused purported the IDs to be genuine National Identity cards issued by the National Registration Bureau.

He denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe.

The accused had been arraigned in court on 6th December 2024 under a miscellaneous application where the police sought orders to detain him to conclude investigations.

The court heard that the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) received information through intelligence on 5th December 2024, to the effect that a certain criminal syndicate residing in Nairobi and other parts of the country was engaging in cybercrime related activities targeting bank accounts and executing electronic money transfers without authority of the bank account holders.

Police told the court that upon entering his house, the officers conducted a search and recovered 19 Identity Cards, 11 debit cards, 13 Safaricom sim cards, 31 Airtel Sim cards, 3 Equitel Sim cards, 3 mobile phones and an assortment of documents including academic certificates.
