A content creator who impersonated Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on social media to defraud well wishers has been sentenced to serve seven months.

Collins Kiplenting pleaded guilty to impersonating the second in command between November and 6th December 2022.

Principal Magistrate Esther Kimilu gave Kiplenting the alternative to pay a fine of Sh 50,000 to secure his freedom.

The court heard that the accused presented himself as Deputy President Gachagua with intent to defraud.

Prosecutor Ann Munyua told the court that Kiplenting has been impersonating the Deputy president and posting movements, projects and daily activities that were being carried out by Gachagua.

Munyua told the court that the accused had posted a Paybill number 329329 and account number 0100434508800 for hunger donation purportedly by the deputy President.

The private secretary in the office of the deputy president noted the Paybill and the account number were not official Paybill numbers provided by the DP’s office for the donations prompting the matter to be reported to the police.

In mitigation, Kiplenting told the court that he is a content creator from mashinani (village) who was after likes and views.

He apologised and pleaded with the court to give him a job if any is available.
