A former Nairobi County Finance CEC has told court that former Nairobi County Governor was impeached and charged in court because he was fighting corruption at City Hall.

Winfred Gathagu told Principal Magistrate Charles Ondieki that senior government officials had approached her and other CECs urging them to support Sonko’s impeachment.

“Senior State House officials approached me and other county executives in 2019, urging us to help fabricate criminal charges and support Sonko’s impeachment because he was fighting corruption at City Hall,” Gathagu said.

While defending the former governor in his Sh 20 million graft case, Gathagu testified that the State House officials wanted them to help in fabricating cases against the former county boss

There were several strategy meetings at State House which focused on building a strong case against Sonko,” she added.

Gathagu told the court that even though she recorded two statements with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) in January 2020, she was never called to testify as a prosecution witness in the case.

In the case, Sonko is facing several graft charges alongside Patrick Ambok Jamal.
