Two men have been charged with Sh 22 million fraud after failing to sell precious stones Tanzanite to Dubai.
Humphrey Mulindi Mathahana and Steve Ochieng Odhiambo are accused of obtaining obtaining Tanzanite minerals measuring 456.8 carats valued at USD 147,553 (Apprx Sh 16,201,319) from Emily Silaton Mututua, a Director of Milestone Gemstone Kenya Limited Company by falsely pretending that they would sell the said Tanzanite minerals measuring to Dubai, a fact they knew to be false.
In another charge, the accused persons are said to have obtained more Tanzanite minerals measuring 230.483 carats valued at USD 71,883 (Apprx Sh. 7,892,753) from Milestone director Mututua under similar pretense.
The duo is alleged to have committed the offense on the 5th February 2021 at the Ministry of Mining offices in Nairobi County.
Muthahana and Odhiambo are also facing charges of conspiracy to defraud Mututua the said minerals.
They denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Caroline Mugo.
Each accused person was granted a bond of Sh 5 million with alternative cash bail of Sh 2 million.
