A Ugandan National has been charged in Nairobi, Kenya is the recent suspect to be charged with defrauding a foreign investor over Sh 225 million in a fake gold sale deal.
Steven John Waiswa is accused of obtaining USD 1,271,200.74 (Apprx. Sh 223,756,000) from Tanner Caldwell Cook by pretending that he was in a position to sell to him 2,820 Kgs of gold, a fact he knew to be false.
Waiswa is alleged to have committed the offense between 31st March and 30th May, 2024 in Nairobi, jointly with others before court.
The accused person is also charged with conspiring with others before court to steal the said money from Cook.
He denied the charges before Senior Resident Magistrate Irene Thamara and was granted a bond of Sh 2 million and one Kenyan surety.
Alternatively, he can deposit a cash bail of Sh 500,000 and provide two contact persons.
Waiswa was also ordered to deposit his passport in court as additional security.
The case will be mentioned on 11th March 2026 for consolidation with another similar matter.
