Speaker Mutura released on Sh 500,000 bail

Nairobi County Assembly speaker Benson Mutura Kangara has been arraigned before court on allegations of stealing.

Speaker Mutura appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Esther Kimilu. However he did not plead to the charges after the court was informed of an application filed before the High Court seeking to stop his prosecution.

His lawyers Duncan Okatch told the court that they had filed a matter at the High Court and were waiting for the outcome.

Okatch requested the court to release his client on bail pending the hearing and determination of the application.

Mutura is accused of stealing Sh 5,348,984 the property of County Government of Nairobi. Money which came to in to his possession by virtue of his employment.

The speaker is alleged to have committed the offence between 1st February 2021 and 28th February 2022 in Nairobi.

He was released on a cash bail of Sh 500,000.

The plea was deferred to 16th May 2022.
