Aspiring MP charged over Sh 13 million gold deal

A parliamentary candidate in the 2022 General elections has been charged with conspiring to steal from a Thai national USD 90,600 (apprx. Sh 13.3 million) in a fake gold sale.

Johnathan Okoth Opande alias Okoth Magawi who was vying for the Nyakach Parliamentary seat is accused of conspiring with others not before court to steal the money from Kitwisit Songsri by purporting he was in a position to sell to him three kilograms of gold.

Opande is alleged to have committed the offense on diverse dates between 18th and 27th April 2023 jointly with others not before court, with intent to defraud.

He pleaded not guilty before the Makadara Law Courts and was granted a cash bail of Sh 100, 000.

The trial will commence in February 2024.
