Congolese national charged with Sh 220M gold fraud

A Congolese national has been charged in Nairobi with defrauding a foreigner over Sh 220 in a non-existent gold sale deal.

Eric Kalala Mukendi is accused of obtaining USD 1,271,200.74 (apprx Sh 223,756,000) from Tanner Caldwel Cook by falsely pretending that he was in a position to sell 2,820 kgs of gold to him, a fact he knew to be false.

Mukendi is alleged to have committed the offense on diverse dates between 31st March and 30th May 2024 Kenya, in Nairobi, Kenya, jointly with others not before court.

The accused is also facing a charge of conspiring with others not before court to steal the said money from Cook.

He denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe.

Being a foreigner, the court asked for a social inquiry report before proceeding to grant him bail.

The case will be mentioned on 11th December 2024.
