Police officers and a prison warden arrested for illegally selling ammunition have been arraigned in court.
Charles Lorita Ekidor, Ileli Cyrus Kisamwa, Samson Muriithi Mutongu, Wesley Sang and Paul Kipketer Tonui were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina.
The police want the court to grant them custodial orders to detain the five for 14 days to conclude investigations.
The suspects were arrested in 26th September 2025 in Eldoret and Nairobi.
Kisamwa and Mutongu are alleged to have been involved in the ferrying of ammunition from the central stores in Nairobi where both are attached.
According to an affidavit by Corporal Hullary Kimiyu, Ekidor, a prison warder was to receive and transport the same to Lodwar.
“Intelligence further connects the 1st respondent (Ekidor) to the sale of ammunition at Lokichogio market, near the Kenya South Sudan border,” Corporal Kimiyu added.
Chief Inspector Sang and Tonui are said to the custodian of the keys to the stores where the recovered ammunition had been kept.
The investigators want the suspects detained to prevent them from contacting or intimidating potential witnesses, interfering with yet to be recovered exhibits and frustrating the ongoing tracing of accomplices.
According to CPL Kimiyu, the nature of the offences directly touches on National Security.
“The North Rift region is presently volatile due to banditry and proliferation of small arms. The respondents’ continued involvement posses an immediate threat to public safety.
The defense lawyers opposed the custodial application on grounds that no sufficient evidence had been adduced by the state.
Sang’s lawyers led by Danstan Omari, Cliff Ombeta and Shadrack Wambui said that their client is not the armoury custodian.
The court heard that the suspect only repairs broken firearms.
The ruling on the application will be delivered on 30th September 2025.
