Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) politician Philip Nahashon Aroko will remain in custody for another seven days to allow police to conclude investigations into the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Were.
Aroko was arraigned before JKIA Law Court Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi under a miscellaneous application where the police sought orders to detain him for 30 days pending investigations.
The magistrate ruled the state did not adduce sufficient grounds to warrant Aroko’s detention for 30 days.
According to an affidavit by Inspector Oliver Nabonwe, Aroko was in constant communication with the other suspects already before court immediately before, during and after commission of the offense.
The court heard that mobile phone triangulation also placed some of the other suspects near the scene of crime hence need for more investigations.
Inspector Nabonwe added that the suspects, who were in constant communication with the respondent’s accomplices have been linked to the firearm that fired the fatal bullets.
“Therefore, there is need for the investigators to be given more time with the respondent to conclude these investigations,” the officer stated.
MP Charles Were was shot dead on 30th April 2025 by unknown people at the City Mortuary roundabout along Valley Road in Kilimani, Nairobi.
The MP had stopped at a red light before the assailants fired killing him on the spot.
