Businessman charged with stealing Sh 20 million poisonous sugar

A businessman has been charged with stealing 20,064 bags of 50kgs of condemned brown sugar valued at Sh 20,064,000, the property of Kenya Revenue Authority.

Yahye Elias Bare is accused of stealing the said sugar which was intended to be used as raw material for distillation of Industrial Ethanol.

The accused is also charged with conspiring to steal the condemned sugar on diverse dates between 9th December and 3rd May 2023, jointly with others not before court.

In addition, Bare is accused of interfering with goods subject to customs control by removing said sugar.

He denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Dolphina Alego.

The accused was granted a cash bail of Sh 400,000 pending the hearing and determination of the case.
