A Nairobi Court has ordered five Chinese nationals charged with engaging in mining activities without a license to remain in custody.

Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Benard Ochoi favored the prosecution’s application not to release the three on bail pending the hearing and determination of the case

According to the investigating officer, the accused, Yao Youming, Edion Lion, Wang Zi Ling, Shun Ming and Wang Yang are at flight risk and declined to produce their documents during arrest.

“The accused persons refused to produce their documents for verification,” the investigating officer told the court.

It is also suspected that the names they gave to the police are not their real names.

The accused persons were charged on 28th January 2022 with engaging in mining without a valid license.

They are alleged to have committed the offense on 26th January 2022 at Arundo area of Rongo sub county in Migori County jointly with others not before court.

In addition, the trio is charged with engaging in mining business without being authorized to do so by a permit with Rio-Kavirondo limited.

The court further heard that the accused persons were unlawfully present in Kenya.
