M-pesa agent linked to conning MPs via Sabina Chege’s name charged

An M-pesa agent believed to be one of those behind conning MPs through mobile money transfer in the name of Murang’a County women representative Sabina Chege has been charged.

Catherine Nyaboke Omwene was charged with knowingly conspiring to register a safaricom mobile number in the name of Sabina Wanjiru Chege to one Waziri Benson Masubo with intent to defraud the public.

She is alleged to have committed the offence at Update Beauty Shop in Donholm Nairobi, jointly with others not before court.

Owene was also charged with permitting the registration of mobile number 072700830 in the names of Sabina Chege to Waziri Benson Masubo a fact she knew to be false.

Catherine Nyaboke Owens before a Nairobi court where she denied fraudulently registering a number in the name of Sabina Chege.

She was again charged with obtaining registration by false pretenses whereby she procuring registration of the Safaricom Mobile number by falsely pretending that number belonged to the Chege.

Further, the accused was charged that being a Safaricom agent, She knowingly and fraudulently made and transmitted electronic registration details of the said number to Safaricom Kenya Limited.

Lastly, Owene was charged with intent to defraud the general public and MPs by permitting the registration.

The accused denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Mutuku.

She was granted a bond of Sh 200,000 or a cash bail of Sh 100,000. The case will be heard on 26th April.

Owene’s arrest comes just days after two Multi-Media University students were charged with using the said number to fraudulently obtain Sh 100,000 from former Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo.

The two were released on a cash bail of Sh 30,000 or a bond of Sh 50,000.

The matter will be heard on April 11, 2018.
