Nandi Senator charged with ethnic contempt and incitement to violence

Nandi Senator Samson Kiprotich Cherargei has been charged with ethnic contempt before a Nairobi court.

Cherargei is accuses of uttering words that were calculated to stir ethnic hatred by the licensing community against other Kenyan communities.

He is alleged to have committed the offence at Kilibwoni primary school in Nandi county while addressing a public gathering during a fundraiser for Kilibwoni football club.

The senator is also facing another charge of incitement to violence.

He denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi and was granted a cash bail of Sh 300,000.

The magistrate had directed that the accused deposits his cash bail by tomorrow noon since most banks had closed by the time he was charged.

The senator was told the only was he would not spend the night in custody yet had not paid bail was on condition that he provided two contact persons.

The matter will be mentioned on 17th December.
