Owner of Matatu that killed NTV journalist charged

The owner of the matatu that hit and killed an NTV journalist early this month has been charged with several traffic offenses.

Stephen Kirumba Njoroge is accused of allowing his matatu, KAR 516X to be driven on a public road without insurance certificate, causing the death of Raphael Nzioki Mutuku, a video editor who was crossing the road at the junction of Kimathi street and Kenyatta Avenue.

The accused is also charged with permitting his vehicle to operate without meeting some of the required standards. Some seatbelts were missing and the windscreen was broken.

He is also accused of failing to keep records of his driver (name, address and driving licence as required by law) who ran away after the accident and is yet to be apprehended.

Njoroge of alleged to have committed the offence on 7th of this month.
She denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Marther Nanzushi.

He was granted a bond of Sh 300,000 and an alternative cash bail of Sh 100,000.

The case will be mentioned on April 30.
