Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kangethe who is wanted in the US for murder will now be detained at the Industrial Area Remand Prison pending his extradition to the US to face 1st degree murder.

Chief Magistrate Lukas Onyina allowed Kangethe to be remanded at the prison after he escaped from Muthaiga Police Station where he was being detained as per court orders.

Kangethe, 41, is accused of killing his girlfriend, Margaret Mbitu in Boston, Massachusetts and leaving her body in his car at Logan International Airport before taking a flight to Kenya.

After his arrest, the court ordered that Kangethe be detained for 30 days at Muthaiga Police Station pending extradition.

However, the suspect is alleged to have escaped from the station under nuclear circumstances before being rearrested at his brother’s house in Ngong, Kajiado County.

While issuing the detention orders, the magistrate ruled that Kangethe cannot be returned to the same police station or any other prison in Kenya not knowing the genesis of his escape or if anyone aided in the escape.

“The prosecution’s application to remand Kangethe prison as the police who had been allowed to keep him are subject of investigation to establish how he managed to escape from Muthaiga Police Station,” the magistrate ruled.
