Sonko’s appeal against IEBC to be heard by three-judge bench

Mombasa Gubernatorial candidate Mike Mbuvi Sonko’s appeal  challenging a decision by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to bar him from vying will now be heard by a three-judge bench.

Justice Olga Sewe directed the appeal be placed before Chief Justice Martha Koome to appoint a bench to hear and determine the case.

Sonko moved to the High Court to challenge the decision by the IEBC Dispute Resolution Committee which disqualified him from vying.

The former Nairobi County Governor wants the court to restrain IEBC from publishing in the Kenya gazette any candidates in respect to the position of governor in Mombasa County.

The Governor argues that on 4th June 2022, IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati, stated in a press statement Sonko was disqualified from contesting for the Mombasa Governor seat.

However, at 3.30 PM, the IEBC purported to change Sonko’s checklist by introducing a new requirement that required him to submit the original degree together with a certified copy of the degree from the issuing institution.
