Three Mathari hospital nurses charged for facilitating escape of 18 male mental patients

Three Mathari Hospital nurses have been arraigned in court and charged with reckless and negligent act causing harm.

The accused Isaac Karanja Maina, Jacqueline Rebeca Aloo and Jacklyne Obonyo are alleged to have facilitated the escape of 18 male mental patients held in the mental hospital.

They are said to have facilitated their escape by unlocking the padlock of the entrance gates in a manner so reckless to endanger the lives of 81 male mental patients.

The nurses are said to have released the 18 mental patients who were confined in wards eight and nine at the said hospital.

The accused are alleged to have committed the offense on 16th June at Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital in Nairobi County.

The three accused persons denied the charge before Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Mutuku and were each released on cash bail of Sh 200,000 or a bond of Sh 500,000.

The matter will be heard on September 7th 2017.
