Businessman charged with conspiracy to defraud Sanlam Insurance over 200 million

A businessman has been charged with conspiracy to defraud Sanlam General Insurance Company Limited Sh 204 million for fire compensation.

Joseph Anthony Maina Kiama is accused of conspiring to defraud Sanlam the fire claim amount by falsely pretending that the machinery and assorted items belonging to Afroplast industries in Thika were destroyed by fire on 27th August 2018.

Kiama is alleged to have committed the offence on diverse dates between 21st March and 27th August 2018 at unknown place in Kenya jointly with others not before court.

The accused is also charged with attempting to obtain the Sh 204 million from Sanlam by false pretences at the company’s offices in Nairobi.

He denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku and was granted a bond of Sh 500,000 or an alternative cash bail of Sh 200,000.
