Fake rice suspects detained for 10 days

Two people arrested repackaging expired rice have been detained for 10 days to allow police to complete investigations.

John Mbugua Kariuki and Jeremiah Kuria Kimani who are alleged to be employees of the S.K NAFAKA Company which was used to trade the rice unfit for consumption.

The respondents were arrested on 15th May at Kariobangi South repackaging several bags of expired rice into bags of foreign brands with extended expiry dates.

According to an affidavit by the Investigating officer, investigations are being carried out in collaboration with the public health team, KEBS, KRA and office of the DPP and most of these agencies require time for sampling and conducting analysis on the unwholesome rice.

“Considering the suspects had supplied the said rice, it is necessary to carry out investigations to the suspected supplied markets all over the county which will require time,” states the officer.

The investigators also require time to travel to the Mombasa Port to authenticate the provided import documents and visit representatives of foreign companies whose packaging bags were found being used by the respondents.

They also want to visit the registrar of companies to verify the Directors of the company used by the respondents trading as S.K NAFAKA so that they can be brought to book.
