Man charged with obtaining 6.7M for false container full of clothes

A man has been charged with obtaining millions of money by false pretenses from a businesswoman in Nairobi.

Maurice Ouma Opiyo is accused of the obtaining Sh 6.7 million from Flora Kisale, a building contractor, by falsely pretending that you were in a position to assist her buy a container of menswear at Kenya Ports Authority’s public auction, a fact he knew to be false.

Opiyo is alleged to have committed the offense on diverse dates between 26th July and 2nd August 2018 at Nairobi Central Business District jointly with others not before court.

He pleaded not guilty before Nairobi Milimani Law courts Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi.

According to the police, the accused is alleged to have to have committed the offense jointly with another still at large.

The two are said to have met Kisale and they engaged in a conversation where they informed her that they had a business deal of buying a container full of menswear at the purported public Auction.

They had previously informed her that the container was being sold at Sh 10 million and pretended that they could raise Sh 3.3 million. She was further informed that there was a ready buyer at Eastleigh by the name Ali Mohamed who was willing to buy the container from them at Sh 30 million.

The complainant was convinced and she agreed to give the remaining amount of Sh 6.7 million. However, after they received the money, they went underground and after she tried to contact them in vain she reported the matter to the police.

The accused person before court was traced and arrested in Kisumu but his accomplice is yet to be arrested.

The magistrate granted him a bond of Sh 1 million or a cash bail of Sh 500,000. The case will be mentioned on 27th August and will be heard on 3rd September 2018.
