Man charged with obtaining Sh 590M in fake gold export deal

A man has been charged with with obtaining over half a billion Kenya shillings in a fake gold export deal.

Fredrick Thuranira M’Iburi is accused of obtaining USD 4,424,500 (apprx Sh 597,307,500) from Vanadze Ramiz by falsely pretending that he was in a position to transport his 161,000 kilograms of gold bars from Kenya to Dubai or Tbilisi, Georgia.

M’Iburi is alleged to have committed the offense on diverse dates between 7th April and 18th May 2023 at unknown place within the Republic of Kenya, jointly with others not before court.

In addition, the accused is charged with unlawfully being in possession of papers intended to resemble and pass as USD 2,360,000 in USD 100 denomination knowing them to be fake.

The court heard he committed the offense on 1st May 2024 at around 16.30 hrs at Githunguri Estate in Embakasi, Nairobi, jointly with others not before court.

M’Iburi is further charged with conspiring with others not before court to obtain the said money.

He denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi and was granted a bond of Sh 3 million.
