Safaricom employee charged with conspiracy to steal Sh 29M from Police Sacco through fraudulent registration of simcards

A Safaricom PLC employee has been charged with conspiracy to steal sh 29.5 million from National Police DT Sacco Society Limited through fraudulently registered sim cards.

David Obwanga Adoyo, a Trade Development Representative at the telco is accused of committing the offence on diverse dates between 29th August 2021 and 15th April 2022 at an unknown place within the Republic of Kenya, with others before court.

Adoyo is also charged with aiding the commission of an offence by facilitating registration of five mobile telephone numbers using identity card particulars without consent of the owners. The same were later linked to members’ Fosa accounts and fraudulently withdrew Sh 12,954,937 (Twelve Million Nine Hundred and Fifty- Four thousand, Nine hundred and Thirty Seven) being part of the money stolen from the Sacco.

In addition, the accused is charged with five counts of unlawfully making use of the identity cards of the five customers to register sim cards without their consent.

The accused denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe. He was granted a bond of Sh 5 million with alternative cash bail of Sh 1 million.
